Due to significant advances in Palaeolithic research, a new Research and Conservation Framework document was published in for the Palaeolithic alone, in which it was noted that Mesolithic archaeology had developed a distinct agenda and set of requirements. Since , Mesolithic archaeology has indeed changed significantly: many important discoveries have been made and there has been increased interest in the period among both archaeologists and the public. A new Mesolithic Framework was necessary in order to improve understanding of the period and guide future work. Accordingly this document outlines the current challenges facing the study of the Mesolithic, as well as the opportunities, and sets out a series of research themes and strategies to address these over-arching aims. Since the previous Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Framework document Prehistoric Society was produced numerous significant discoveries have been made and fresh perspectives have been developed for the British Mesolithic. These include the discovery of a number of settlement sites with houses; the recognition of the potential of intertidal and offshore deposits following the mapping of submerged landscapes under the North Sea and elsewhere; renewed excavations at the flagship site of Star Carr which have highlighted alarming problems with drying out of the peat; and more detailed studies of the Mesolithic environment and landscape change including the creation and settlement of the British archipelago.

In physics, optically stimulated luminescence OSL is a method for measuring doses from ionizing radiation. It is used in at least two applications: luminescence dating of ancient materials: mainly geological sediments and sometimes fired pottery, bricks etc. The first technique is the well-known SAR-OSL technique single-aliquot regenerative dose optically stimulated luminescence and is based on OlleyPrecision and accuracy in the optically stimulated luminescence dating of Precision and accuracy in the optically stimulated luminescence dating of sedimentary quartz: A status review This confirms that only systematic testing of different Pb dating models and routine validation using independent time markers produces reliable Pb chronologies.

Dating techniques of interest to archaeologists include thermoluminescence, optically stimulated luminescence, electron spin resonance, and fission track dating, as well as techniques that depend on annual bands or layers, such as dendrochronology , tephrochronology , and varve chronology. Single Quartz OSL ages can be determined typically from to , years BP, and can be reliable when suitable methods are used and proper checks are done. Optical dating using Optically stimulated luminescence OSL has been used on sediments.

In multiple-aliquot testing, a number of grains of sand are stimulated at the same time and the resulting luminescence signature is averaged. In contrast to the multiple-aliquot method, the Single-aliquot-regenerative-dose SAR method tests the burial ages of individual grains of sand which are then plotted. Mixed deposits can be identified and taken into consideration when determining the age [5].

Infrared stimulated luminescence IRSL dating of potassium feldspars has been used. Feldspar IRSL techniques have the potential to extend the datable range out to a million years as feldspars typically have significantly higher dose saturation levels than quartz, though issues regarding anomalous fading will need to be dealt with first. Surfaces made of granite, basalt and sandstone, such as carved rock from ancient monuments and artifacts in ancient buildings has dated using luminescence in several cases of various monuments.

Thermoluminescence TL research was focused on heated pottery and ceramics, burnt flints, baked hearth sediments, oven stones from burnt mounds and other heated objects. TL can be used to date unheated sediments. TL dating of light-sensitive traps in geological sediments of both terrestrial and marine origin became more widespread.

Specimen Label. Unusual within the genus for its distribution – it is the only species found in the eastern United States – and its polymorphic workers. The minor worker of badius , which is the dominant subcaste, can readily be distinguished from the worker of all other species of North American Pogonomyrmex by the head shape, which is rather strongly narrowed posteriorly in full-face view, the conformation of the scape base, and the small eyes which are placed distinctly beneath the middle of the sides of the head.

The major workers, as well as the intermediates, are defined nicely by their disproportionately enlarged heads.

The Middle to Later Stone Age transition in Africa has been debated as a significant shift in human technological, cultural, and cognitive evolution.

However, the majority of research on this transition is currently focused on southern Africa due to a lack of long-term, stratified sites across much of the African continent. Here, we report a 78,year-long archeological record from Panga ya Saidi, a cave in the humid coastal forest of Kenya.

A dating method that measures the amount of light released when an object is heated. Thermoluminescence, or TL, has been used since the s to determine the approximated firing date of pottery and burnt silicate materials. TL has a wide dating range; it has been used to date ceramics from a few hundred years old to geologic formations that are half a million years old. The technique measures the small amount of energy that continually builds up in the mineral crystal lattice.

When heated, this energy is released as a burst of light.
